Oz: The Great and Powerful
As I was watching Oz, I was intrigued by the decision of
Theodora to take a bite of the Apple.
Clearly this can be compared to the Biblical account of Eve taking a
bite from the forbidden fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. The writer of Genesis says that the couple’s
eyes were immediately opened and aware of the fact that they were naked. When Theodora takes the bite of the apple,
she becomes aware of her sister’s true nature: wicked. This acquisition of knowledge correlates to
Adam and Eve. However, what I find to be
interesting is the ways in which the antagonist tricked their respective
targets. In the Bible, the serpent seems
to question the validity of God’s claim.
He gives a conflicting opinion that the couple will surely not die, but
rather gain knowledge and become more like God.
However, with Evanora, she convinces her sister through an emotional
attack, that Oz was unfaithful and insincere.
She plays on her sister’s emotions in order to deceive. Scenarios like this make me thankful for
forgiveness and second chances. It
seemed that when Theodora ate of the fruit there was no going back. She had made a decision that would affect the
rest of her life.
