Paul Meredith- Personal Blog

In completing my paper on the move gladiator, i found many themes and symbols portrayed throughout the movie. Some of the themes include: love and good vs. evil. The main symbol was the use or vision of afterlife. In the film Maximus was known to be a loving father and husband. He was the general of Rome's Army and was respected by the troops and the emperor of Rome. Since Maximus had good morals and was well respected and loved by the emperor, the emperor wanted him to take his place when he died. This caused a problem in the movie because the emperor had a son that could of took his place. This  also caused a big problem among the families. Commodus, the emperor's son had Maximus family murdered and tried to have Maximus himself murdered but failed to do so. Maximus is then turned into a gladiator where he later finds out he has a chance to fight in front of the emperor in Rome. He plans to take revenge on Commodus, in which he later kills him.

Maximus did what he did for his love of his family, the emperor, and the love for Rome. He was portrayed as Christ-like figure throughout the movie because he gave his life to save so many others. On the other hand Commodus was the exact opposite. He was power hungry and would do anything to be respected. Since Maximus was known as the good figure he one the battle. Also what i thought was interesting was the use of afterlife visions in the movie. This showed the Christianity religion. In showed how his family was waiting for him at the gates of heaven. I absolutely enjoyed watching this movie. It is one of my all time favorites.
