Benjamin Roseberry Misc Judgment

It’s Judgment That Defeats Us

As I was researching for the post on Apocalypse Now, I stumbled upon a person’s blog who had quite a few good pieces of insight into Colonel Kurtz and his philosophy.  The writer, Steven Lloyd, lays out the question of Apocalypse Now as being “Given the horror, what do we do?”  There must be a reaction to the present war.  If war are the cards dealt to us, what are we to do?  However, later in his blog entry he writes that Kurtz has the correct vantage point.  He writes that war is illogical to a civilized people because war is a time without rules.  But as I started to think about this blog, I realized that war is not actually a time without rules.  Wartime is actually a structured and carefully calculated adventure.  Both teams seemingly play by the rules, one of these being “Fair fighting.”  But what I propose sets this war apart is that Vietcong forces do not play by the rules.  This is why Kurtz must be eliminated.  Kurtz’s tactic is one which will be met with death and destruction if abided by.
