Steven Watts- The Avengers

In the film The Avengers the character Loki plays a very prominent roll throughout the story. Loki considers himself to be the most powerful god with the abilities to do as he pleases and to conquer the people of other planets. Loki brings about some very interesting and challenging religious connotations through his actions during the film. He makes himself a self-proclaimed God and attempts to take over Earth and make all its inhabitants bow down to him. There is one scene in particular that really stood out to me. It was when Captain America is told that Loki and Thor are 'god like'. His response was simply, "Ma'am, There is only one God and I am pretty sure he doesn't dress like that." Granted this was a fairly humorous remark, but it held a lot of spiritual weight as well. Often times people try to lift themselves up to a level where other people look up to them based on what they have or what they control, but Captain America's comment makes you stop and think about what is really real and what brings about only temporary, unrealistic fulfillment. I thought that it was a call for humans to realize that the paths of more stuff, more power, and more money only lead to self-destruction. Although it is not bad to have these traits, like the Avengers, rather it is what you choose to do with them that really makes you into the person you are meant to be.
