Marion Lichty: Northfork

Northfork is a movie about a town that is dying and being evacuated.  This movie also has a mini story about a little boy and his journey to heaven.  It was interesting how the movie portrays the sweeper crew as “angels.”  In a way they are because they are helping the last few people.  Now, the little boy in the movie has a dream or vision about angels.  These angels are a little strange; however they are angels.  When watching this part of the movie, I kept thinking of the phrase “your life flashes before your eyes before you die.”  In this case the boy puts the elements of his life within the vision.  For example, the toy plane was their mode of transportation.  The woman’s name was flower Hercules after the comic and the flower.  And the strange creature was based on the Father’s cane.  Lastly, the theme of transcendence was important within the film as well.  The plane was the way of the angels and the little boy were getting to heaven.  The other scene that showed this theme was the coffin on top of the car.  The coffin was taken to higher ground, which symbolized transcendence.  Overall, this was a great movie.
