Decalogue
In the first film, the 1st commandment was
highlighted. This commandment states “Thou shall have no other God before me.”
In this film, the boy and his father had the computer seen as their form of the
“divine.” They wanted their answers to life to come only scientifically. The
boy’s aunt was a voice of reason in the film. She was more compassionate and
saw things differentely than the boy’s father. The father used science to
calculate the ice on the pond that his son was going to ice skate on. What is
interesting here is that it was something natural and you couldn’t calculate
nature. After the son dies in the pond he falls through, the father has a wake
up call and goes to the church. He realized he had been too focused on science
and not enough on other aspects of life, like religion.
