Hairspray

Hairspray is a film set in the 60’s during all the issues with segregation/integration and racism. Tracy is a white high school student who is one of the few non-discriminators.  Tracy and her friend are obsessed with the Corny Collins show.  It’s basically a musical show, but one day a week(?) they have “Negro Day”, where instead of the show being white people, it’s all black people. Tracy loves Negro Day and says it’s her favorite day of the show. The producer of the show decides to cut out the whole Negro Day. Everyone is all upset and mad about it. In the end, with Tracy’s help, they are able to integrate and the whites and blacks are all on the show every day together. This is a great story about standing up for what you believe in, even if it’s not in the majority. Tracy was the only white girl who helped fight and promote integration. I think this served as an example for the other people and ended up making everything work out. It also shows that you can do anything you can put your mind to.
