“The Help”
“The Help” is a film about the African American woman’s
struggle through the 1960’s as the housemaids for white women. During the main
character’s childhood, Skeeter Phelan had a helper that became more of a mother
than her own. She was Skeeter’s nanny so often Skeeter saw her as a mother and
her view on African American women differed from the normal idea that white
women thought. When she graduated college she wanted to become a journalist and
soon began writing a book with all the helper’s stories inside. She was a voice
for these women that would finally be heard and changed these woman’s lives.
This movie is by far my favorite film. I like to see how our society has grown
since then. It is amazing how people can set aside the ideas that their parents
and grandparents have tried instilling in them. Our society isn’t completely
harmonious, but I hope one day we will be. The African American culture has
come so far. We have a black president and so many role models in entertainment
and history. I hope that our society works hard to get closer and closer to a
country that is free of discrimination.
