Steven Watts-Oz the Great and Powerful Wizard
Apart from the common themes that were shared between this film and the older one, I did not find as much in common between the two as I had been expecting. Although this may not have been the case, the film turned out to be much better than I had anticipated going into it. Throughout this entire film, you were able to see the conflicts that each individual character had within them. The large over arching theme throughout the movie clearly was the fight between good and evil, but the more specific conflicts were clearly developed within the characters. Oscar had a strong desire for power, control, and wealth, but as the film progressed, you were able to see his attitude shift from self-interest to focusing on the well-being of those around him. In the end of the movie, Oscar was willing to give up what he wanted in his own life to provide the people of Oz, the life that they all deserved and had been fighting for. This draws strong symbolism to Jesus Christ. Although the humans did not deserve Jesus' sacrifice it was done out of love and compassion for the people that he truly cared about. When Oscar made the decision to let his desires go and focus on the desires of those he cared about, it was at that point where he found true joy and happiness in his life.
